This role is important in the tournament and the job profile includes a variety of duties by the person including starting all games every day by announcing ‘shuffle up and deal’.
A very significant task of a poker tournament director is to arbitrate in cases of dispute arising between the dealer and players or among the players themselves. Usually a poker tournament director is one of the regular staff in the casino house which is hosting the competition.
All poker tournaments are played according to some standard protocol of the game which include procedure for the competition and norms to be followed by all poker players, in general and the poker industry, in particular. These rules are assembled to form the International poker rules. There are almost 80 rules and regulations in the International poker rulebook to guide play in a tournament. The rules have been formulated by taking into consideration the latest edition of Poker Tournament Director’s Association’s rules and they act as the official reference for the players and the industry so that they can use the resource to play according to internationally accepted norms.
However, the International poker rules are not rigid and can be adapted by casino houses and tournaments to correspond with the regulations and legal stipulation of the house rules, the state where the games are being played, Federal and Country Gaming Commission laws etc. Moreover, every time a poker tournament is being played, the venue’s management may make new stipulations which has to be followed in addition to the International poker rules and often the venue’s set of regulations are given first preference. It is important that all participant players are made aware of the International poker rules and their modifications, if any.
